The field was 20 and 20 and my backyard was in suburban clarksville tennessee.

In 1986 i had a field of golden wheat in my backyard. Fall plantings will be less likely to need additional water but spring plantings will need an inch of water per week. Which gets harvested in mid june followed by a dry bean which is harvested in late sept which is followed by garlic in oct.

We can grow as much fruit and veggies as we want to but if we like wheat bread or oatmeal we are still not going to be as self sufficient. Keep the area moist to encourage germination. Don t assume growing wheat is an activity best suited to the vast plains of kansas and nebraska.

Water whenever the top inch of soil is dry. Wheat is very high in fiber and manganese and its gluten is what makes such excellent bread. You can probably grow wheat where you are at whether summer or winter wheat.
